Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) have declared the results of Class 12th Results today on 1st June at 6:00 AM which it was supposed to announce on 31st May.

It has been a long long day for all the students for PSEB who have been waiting for the results whole day yesterday. Finally these results are out and can be checked on the official website of PSEB on http://www.pseb.ac.in/frmResultShow.htm.

It seems this is regulat habit of PSEB, earlier Class 8th results were scheduled to be declared on 15th May whereas they were announced on 16th May, 2010.

Kareena Kapoor is all set to add Bollywood glamour to the official FIFA World Cup music video. She will be seen in a special video for the event along with Hollywood stars such as Matt Damon, Jessica Alba and Kevin Spacey. And Bebo is the only Indian face in the song.

Although the actress is yet to go on record about her big- ticket assignment, the buzz suggests her talks with FIFA officials are in the final stages.

“ Yes, Kareena is doing the FIFA video but it is too early to divulge details because things are still being finalised,” said a source close to the actress.

The source added Kareena had already informed the producers of her current assignments that she would need a break for the video.

Right now, she is busy wrapping up Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 3 in Goa.

She is also shooting for Karan Johar’s remake of Stepmom and Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra. One , after which she will start work on Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine . Reports suggest the video will be shot in the first week of June.

Kareena is accordingly working out her dates and finalising the costumes she will wear.

This is Kareena’s first shot at football, but her co- stars in the video, Jessica and Matt, have had their brush with sports.

While Matt played a South African rugby star in Clint Eastwood’s Invictus , Jessica recently visited the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg as part of a promotional event for the upcoming World Cup.

“ Not only is this going to be a tournament to remember, but the lasting legacy of this World Cup will be education for all,” said Jessica, referring to efforts by 1GOAL, a group that campaigns for education for all.

Kareena apart, Bollywood music composer duo Salim- Sulaiman will be composing an original song that they will perform at the opening and closing ceremonies of football’s biggest extravaganza. The World Cup will take place in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.

Coming back to Kareena, she has decided not to sign any new film this year because she wants to focus on playing an actress in Bhandarkar’s Heroine . Right now, she is doing research for the role by studying closely the works of several famous actresses.

Besides Hollywood greats such as Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe, Kareena is also studying the films of Madhubala, Nutan and her mother Babita.

Kareena wants to dedicate Heroine to the yesteryear Indian divas.

Bhandarkar apparently wanted Kareena to put on weight for the role, but she has reportedly refused saying she is already voluptuous.

Kareena’s next release will be Boney Kapoor’s long- in- the- making Milenge Milenge , in which she stars opposite ex- boyfriend Shahid Kapur.

The Tobacco industry is slowly but steadily spreading its tentacles towards women.

On the eve of the World No Tobacco Day, the World Health Organization ( WHO) has expressed concern over the industry's attempts to associate tobacco use with beauty and liberation.

“ We know tobacco advertising is increasingly targeting girls,” Dr Ala Alwan, WHO assistant director- general for non- communicable diseases and mental health, said.

“ Tobacco use is neither liberating nor glamorous.” Women are being wooed to replace those users who will quit or die prematurely from tobacco- related diseases, Alwan said. They are also more vulnerable to passive smoking.

Of the 4,30, 000 adult deaths caused by passive smoking every year across the world, 64 per cent are women.

Even among smokers, about 200 million of the worlds one billion smokers are women. The WHO says tobacco prevention and cessation programmes should be integrated into maternal, child and reproductive health services.

Also, since illiteracy is higher among women, the warnings against tobacco use must include pictures that can convey the message effectively.

Though women constitute only about 20 per cent of the worlds smokers, tobacco use among girls is increasing in some countries and regions, the WHO says.

The consequences could be alarming because women smokers face a higher risk of infertility and delays in conceiving.

Smoking during pregnancy increases the chances of premature delivery, stillbirth and newborn death, and may even dry up breast milk.

It also increases the risk of cervical cancer.

According to the WHO, in half of the 151 countries surveyed for trends in tobacco use among young people, there wasn't much difference between the number of men and women smokers.

More girls used tobacco in countries such as Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Cook Islands, Croatia, Czech Republic, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria and Uruguay.

According to the estimates of the latest National Family Health Survey, 57 per cent men and 10.8 per cent women consume tobacco in India.

Spiritual Guru and Art of Living Foundation founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar escaped an attempt on his life on Sunday evening when an unidentified man fired at him inside his sprawling ashram on the outskirts of Bangalore.

The gunman, who was part of the crowd listening to the discourse, fired from a distance and fled immediately after pulling the trigger.

A follower of the guru was wounded when the bullet hit his thigh. The incident took place around 6.15 pm but was not reported to the police immediately. After receiving information, the police rushed to the spot.

The police said Ravi Shankar was leaving in his car after delivering a discourse to around 2,500 people when the gunman fired at his convoy. The follower — Vinay — was in the backseat.

The bullet pierced through the car door and hit his thigh, the police said. The police have recovered the shell of a .22 pistol from the site of the attack.

Ravi Shankar was whisked away to a secret location soon after the attack. He was brought back to the ashram only around 11 pm.

“ We usually have a satsang ( discourse) from 4 pm every Sunday till around 6 pm. Even people from the neighbouring villages join us. Sri Sri had addressed those gathered at the satsang and completed his discourse and was returning to his kutir ( home) by car when the incident took place,” ashram spokesperson Charu said.

The reason for the attack was yet to be established. Ravi Shankar’s personal assistant Giri Govind said he suspected “ terrorist activity”. “ This is for the first time Ravi Shankar has been attacked. We suspect that it could be an act of terrorism to instill fear among his followers. Let the police investigate. Ravi Shankar is safe and healthy,” he said.

As the guru had received threats from unknown people, he was provided with police security. They were accompanying him at the time of the attack.

The police have detained several of his followers for questioning.

“ The bullet was fired from a particular section of the crowd.

We have taken some of them for questioning. We are yet to commence the preliminary investigations,” they added.

Ashram sources pointed out that strict security measures were not followed to ensure the guru’s safety. The gunman could have taken advantage of this security lapse.

“ Though there are metal detectors at the entry gates of the ashram, it is easy for anybody to smuggle small arms considering the sprawling property spread across several acres.

We have to ascertain all these aspects,” the police said.

Ravi Shankar started the Art of Living Foundation in 1981, which is now present in 140 countries.

However, he shot into prominence in the late 1990s after popularising a special and powerful breathing technique called Sudarshana Kriya . He operates from his huge ashram located on Kanakapura Road, 18 km from Bangalore.

It is based on a video game and it’s Hollywood assembly-line at work. The obvious note of warning: Don’t go in expecting intelligent stuff here. Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time was manufactured to regale as mega adventure for the whole family. It’s the sort of glossy package big studio bosses habitually line up every summer for the big bucks.

In sync with the way such films are made... sorry, assembled... a lot more vision has evidently gone into the film’s look and styling than content. Technically, this is snazzy, high-voltage action fare that blends Oriental exotica with spectacular stunts compatible to the western mindset. The swagger with which a Persian fable is turned to suit American box-office tastes is in your face too (of course with new-age Yankee Doodle Jake Gyllenhaal playing Prince of Persia, what else did you expect?).

Gyllenhaal must have signed this film because he was bored with his tag of respected offbeat actor — one that he built painstakingly with a roster boasting Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain and Zodiac among other films.

The actor seems to be in the mood for some fun this time, and this film is quite rightly his perfect shot at some mainstream glitter. Indeed, if Gyllenhaal was itching to have a superhero franchise title for himself, this is it. Prince Of Persia rides on a hype machinery that will guarantee at least a sequel or two. If Gyllenhaal cuts quite the cool dude’s picture as Prince Dastan, director Mike Newell didn’t imagine looking beyond Gemma Arterton for his very Persian princess Tamina.

Quite inexplicably, Hollywood seems to have discovered some sort of an outlandish charm in the very British Gemma.

Just a few weeks ago, she was playing the Greek nymph Lo in Clash Of The Titans. And now, this. May be, the Kent twang in her English is a good enough excuse for American filmmakers to pass Gemma off as ‘exotic’. Uh, well. You don’t expect a Hollywood production of a mythical West Asian hero’s exploits to be culturally honest. As long as the fireworks keep rolling, everyone’s happy.

Sure, there are the fireworks — lots of it as beefed-up Jake steps into the boots of Dastan. He’s a street urchin to begin with, living in Persia — because that’s where he also lives in within the reality of the video game from which the film has been derived. Dastan impresses the king one day, who in turn decides to adopt him.

Since the boy is quite brave the king doesn’t think twice before declaring Dastan as his heir, over his own sons.

Time for action, so enter Ben Kingsley as the king’s vile brother Nizam, who wants to wrest power, of course. Action isn’t enough — you need to serve it a pinch of oomph. So, Dastan finds an ally in Princess Tamina to thwart Nizam’s designs.

Hold on. If it’s an Oriental adventure, where’s the mumbo jumbo? Sure enough, Nizam, it turns out, wants The Dagger of Time, which can render to its owner the power to travel in time for short periods and alter the past. Nizam wants to go into the past, create a sandstorm and destroy the world so that he can create a new order for himself. Which means Prince Dastan and Princess Tamina have enough work at hand (and choreographed action to engage in) for the film to last a runtime of around a couple of hours. THIS is a mammoth project, one that’s taken seven big moneybags to executive- produce it. The name helming the production crew is Jerry Bruckheimer.

If you know him as the man who shelled out the doe for stuff such as Top Gun, Days Of Thunder, Con Air, The Rock, National Treasure, the Bad Boys flicks, and the Pirates Of The Caribbean flicks, you know Jerry’s a guy for whom nothing succeeds like excess. Prince Of Persia merely lives up to the diktat. Quite natural that Big Jerry should sign on Mike Newell as director. Newell qualified as a maker of big-ticket hoopla the day he made a Harry Potter film (Goblet Of Fire was directed by him). He sure has an idea on how to jazz it up for effect. That Newell wasn’t looking beyond video game basics is clear. His film credits its script to Jordan Mechner, game designer who conceptualised the Prince Of Persia game franchise.

Still, the film is a big-screen wonder. Just what you expect when the cinematographer of Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone (John Seale), the production designer of The Last Of The Mohicans (Wolf Kroeger) the film editors of (Raiders Of The Lost Ark (Michael Kahn), Chicago (Martin Walsh) and Mona Lisa Smile (Mick Audsley) join hands with special effects supervisor Trevor Wood (The Golden Compass). Those above-cited are among names that have made new-age commercial Hollywood worth what it is, visually speaking. You may have glossed over their triumphs at sundry Oscar nights amid all the stardust. The truth is films such as this one would have seemed more apologetic than bad historic soaps on apna desi TV had not these guys made it their job to fashion A-rate spectacles out of dead-as-dodo scripts.

It was yet another ‘ near miss’ in a long list of near misses on Wednesday evening. A Jet Airways flight was cleared to land at the Mumbai airport while an Indigo flight ready to take off was on the designated runway.

A possible mishap was averted when the Jet Airways flight 9W 616 from Kolkata to Mumbai was asked to abort landing after an Indigo flight 6E415 was spotted on the runway.

The incident coming within a fortnight of the Mangalore aircrash had the Directorate General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA) moving in quickly to claim that it was not a near miss but a “ runway incursion”. However, the DGCA has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The Jet flight was initially cleared to land on runway 27 at the Mumbai international airport at 9 pm while the Indigo flight was already on the runway to take off for Bangalore.

The descending Jet flight was at 700 feet from the runway when the ATC alerted its pilot to abort landing and take a go around.

The Indigo aircraft preparing to take off for Bangalore was directed by the ATC to take the runway 27, but sources said instead of being at the end of the runway it went beyond. “ The confusion was created because the taxiway light was not functioning,” Indigo sources said.

The CEO of Indigo Airlines, Aditya Ghosh, said: “ The flight stopped short of runway 27. A correct picture would emerge when we go through the cockpit voice recorder.” “ Jet Airways flight while on approach to landing was asked by the Mumbai ATC to go around due to a runway incursion by another operator's aircraft. It is a normal practice in such cases. The incident is being investigated by authorities concerned,” said a Jet Airways official.

But the blamegame between the parties concerned has already begun with the Mumbai ATC claiming the Indigo flight, which was going to the taxiway, entered in to the runway as the taxiway lights were not functioning properly.

The Mumbai International Airport Private Ltd ( MIAL), which manages the airport and the facilities such as the runway and the taxiway lights, blamed the Mumbai ATC and the Indigo pilot.

“ The taxiway lights were functioning intermittently because of a circuit problem. The ATC was informed about the lights malfunction.

We had also allocated ‘ follow me vehicle escorts’ which lead the plane in such a situation to show the taxiway. In fact, two other aircraft had used the same facility just before the Indigo flight,” MIAL spokesperson Manish Kalhatgi said.

The spokesperson put the ball in the ATC’s court and also pointed fingures at the Indigo aircraft pilot.

“ It is the ATC’s job to tell the aircraft about the follow- me procedure as we had already informed the ATC. Whether the ATC did not tell the Indigo pilot or whether the pilot in spite of being told did not use the procedure, we don’t know,” Kalhatgi added.

CBSE is certainly making the education system flexible here atleast for class 10th Students. Board exams have been made optional from the academic year 2010-11.

A new system of evaluation – Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) – based on grades has been approved. It comprises formative and summative assessment of the student to be done over two terms – first and second -during the year-long academic calendar.

Summative Assessment: Based on the term-end examination

1) There will be two evaluations each in the first and second terms.

2) Each evaluation will carry 10 marks apiece.

Formative Assessment: To evaluate and grade class work, homework, assignment and project work

1) There will be one term-end exam for each term.

2) The first term-end exam will carry 20 marks.

3) The second term-end exam will carry 40 marks.

Grades Awarded

Students of class IX and X will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system. Each grade, given on the basis of both formative and summative assessments.

91-100 - A1
81 -90 - A2
71 -80 - B1
61-70 - B2
51 -60 - C1
41 -50 - C2
33-40 - D

At First glance, 14-year-old Sahal Kaushik looks like an ordinary school-going teenager. But this Dwarka boy has made history by becoming the youngest ever student to crack the super prestigious IIT-JEE with flying colours. Kaushik has secured the 33rd rank in the all-India entrance test.

A student of Vandana International School, Dwarka, Kaushik scored 73 per cent marks in his Class XII board exams. Setting records comes easily for Kaushik who cleared his Class X board exams with 76 per cent marks when he was just 12.

While making it to the top 50 of IIT-JEE might sound extraordinary to many, it is not a big deal for Kaushik. “It’s OK. What I did is just a regular thing. Why is such a big fuss being created about it?” Kaushik said in a matter-of-fact manner on Wednesday evening.

The venue was the India Habitat Centre, where his coaching institute, Narayana IIT Academy, Delhi branch, had organised a special felicitation function to honour the young achiever. “I want to do research and it is pure sciences that interest me, not engineering. I’ll not join the BTech course. Rather, I’m interested in MSc Physics,” the shy teen said.

It was his mother, Ruchi Kaushik, who noted the signs of a genius in her son when he was only two years old. The mother had bid adieu to the medical profession some 12 years ago and focused on teaching her son at home.

“At the age of two, he recited mathematics tables, solved maths sums with ease and spelt four and five-letter words accurately. We knew that he was a brilliant child. Sahal was hometutored and went to school only in Class IX,” the proud mother revealed.

When asked if she faced any problem when he wrote his Class XII board exams, she replied: “Not at all. Like any other regular student, his forms with his date of birth were submitted to the CBSE and he was allowed to take the board exams.”

The genius’s favourite sports are swimming and badminton and he already has a few international awards in his kitty. He won a silver medal at the Asian Physics Olympiad in 2009 and bagged bronze this year at the same event. He was also a part of the team that represented India at the Asian Science Camp held in Japan in 2009.

Asked about tips for those preparing for IIT-JEE, Kaushik replied: “Just study for six hours, understand the concepts and take the test.” Though he has cleared the exam to be eligible to study at any IIT, a place that most young Indians would give an arm and a leg to study at, Kaushik has kept his options open — he may take admission at IIT Kanpur or may move to the US as research is what he is focused on.

Kaushik treasures his books and is completely hooked to nature documentaries and David Attenborough programmes along with old classic movies. “I like old realistic movies such as Bridge on the River Kwaiand subjects such as history, mythology and literature interest me. Harry Potter books are my favourite,” he said.

His mother added: “He hates lending his books fearing that they will get lost.” As Kaushik loves gorging on Chinese cuisine and biryani, his family has planned a dinner to celebrate his achievement.

When the IIT results were announced at 8.30 am on Wednesday, his mother felt her efforts had paid off. It was a teacher from the coaching academy who broke the news to the family on phone.

Soon, the B-02, Ispatika Apartments at Sector 4, Dwarka, was buzzing with activity as relatives and friends started pouring in to congratulate the young boy. “Sahal got his due and should do what he wants to do. If he isn’t keen to join BTech, it’s fine with us,” his mother said. His father Colonel T.K. Kaushik is at present posted at Tejpur in Assam.

Those candidates who are unable to produce any of the certificates required for admission, because their University / Board has not issued the same till the last date of admission, will be given provisional admission till August 14, by which date they would be required to submit all the relevant certificates.

Those students who have dropped a year or two because they were preparing for other entrances, or for any other reason, are considered for application by providing valid reason and submitting a proof for the gap years. “ We require valid proof stating that the student was enrolled in some course to consider them for admission,” says Ramachandran.

For those who are seeking admission to science courses, only the science subjects are considered for the aggregate.

Meanwhile, for humanities and commerce, the aggregate is based on the best four subjects, which include one language plus three electives. The eligible cut- off varies from course to course, depending on the stream opted for in Class XII ( namely, Arts, Commerce or Science). For all BA ( Hons) courses, there is an additional pre- requisite of minimum cut- off in the subject of specialisation and/ or in a language. Students from Hindi medium schools can also apply.

To prepare for the new session ahead, Gargi is giving itself an infrastructure overhaul.

“ All the laboratories are being upgraded.

The big classrooms will be fitted with suspended projection systems with sound amplification. There will be an airconditioning system in the reading rooms of the library, while a computer lab is being set up with 50 PCs. The lab will also have an interactive electronic board,” elaborates the principal.

The college also takes care of the specially- abled. There are two ramps and two special toilets on the campus. “ A lift will be installed to make the whole area disabledfriendly,” says Ramachandran.

To cater to the growing demand from students for training in a foreign language — it is not just an enjoyable experience but also an asset as it opens up a lot of job opportunities like the Indian Foreign Service, academics and research, translation and interpretation, among others — the college offers a certificate and diploma course in German and a certificate course in Russian.

The college offers five career intensive courses — Banking and Financial Services, Tally Accounting Programme, Advertising and Marketing Communication, Mass Communication and Entrepreneurship for Tomorrow.

The Banking and Financial Services is an integrated programme to equip students with basic and essential skills required to be absorbed in executive jobs.

A School Teahcer in Nizamabad district of Andhra Pradesh has designed a 16- foot brass- plated pen as a tribute to the UPA government’s initiative in enacting the Right to Education Act.

M. S. Acharya teaches at the Zilla Parishad High School in Sunket village of Nizamabad district. He hit upon the innovative idea after going through reports on the right to education and its impact on the country’s education system.

“ I thought I should present something unique to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a token of appreciation for bringing in the Right to Education Act,” Acharya said.

He struggled for two months to make this pen with the help of four artistes.

The 40- kg pen measuring 16 ft in length, cost him Rs 2.5 lakh.

“ It is made completely of brass, with illustrations of Indian culture, traditional dance forms and classical musical instruments embossed on it from top to bottom. I have named it Bharatiya Paali- 2010 ( Indian Pen 2010),” Acharya said.

The 50- year old teacher also gives credit to his friends P. Srinivas and P. Sanjeeva Rao for supporting him in designing this unique pen.

“ My only wish is that all the children in the country should have the right to primary education. They should have access to pen and pencil, which are their weapons to fight against poverty and illiteracy. My idea of presenting this as a gift to the Prime Minister is that whenever he sees it in his drawing room, it should remind him of those children who are deprived of their right to education,” Acharya said.

He is eagerly awaiting an appointment from the Prime Minister’s Office so that he can personally present the gift to him.

Shazahn Padamsee, who acted opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year last year, stole quite a few hearts with her looks, but the film’s failure went against her.

She has always been quite soft spoken and seemed quite a delicate soul. And from what we got to know recently, she indeed is a delicate person.

Recently during the shoots of her next film, Orange , Shazahn had to shoot a scene with a dog. By the end of it she was so stressed that she needed ear plugs to cool down. “ I did a scene with a really hyper dog. I need ear plugs now!” she said later.

While we understand it must have been tough to bear continuous barking, we can’t blame the dog for getting excited! Orange is a Tamil film that also stars Genelia and southern star Ram Charan Teja in the lead.

Freida Pinto and Dev Patel could take their affair to the marriage this summer.

The much- in- love couple, who met on the sets of Slumdog Millionaire, was reportedly seen enquiring about wedding cakes at a US bakery.

The rumours started when Dev and Freida walked hand- in- hand to ‘ Sweet Jane Bakery’ in Los Angeles. They wanted to know about flying the wedding cake to India. The lovebirds, some witnesses said, looked very excited about a future together.

The couple chose the bakery to prepare their wedding cake probably because they had their first date there. There are also reports that the wedding, said to be slated for some time this summer, will be a traditional and lavish affair. However, both Dev and Freida refused to comment on their ‘ impending’ summer nuptials.

Freida, 25, and 20- year- old Dev had started officially dating towards the end of last year.

Their families seem to approve of the relationship.

Dev’s mother had said she was fond of Freida and was happy for her son.

Freida’s latest release was You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, a Hollywood flick directed by Woody Allen. The movie was premiered recently at the Cannes international film festival and received mixed reviews.

Dev, on his part, is due to appear on the screens later this year in The Last Airbender, directed by Manoj Night Shyamalan.

Freida was engaged to publicist Rohan Antao when she met Dev on the sets of the Danny Boyle film. When the engagement was called off, Rohan had blamed Dev. “ I don’t know if they are having a sexual relationship but if I came face to face with him ( Dev), I would have things to say. Now everywhere I go I see them on billboards. I am devastated,” he had said at the time.

Freida had insisted that the break- up was necessary to concentrate on her career.

However, with Dev, she seems to have chosen love over her career.

Petrol Pump owners have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from June 14 if a recent increase in tax on diesel, that they say has badly hit their business, is not withdrawn.

“ Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has not fulfilled her promise of resolving our problems. It leaves us with no other choice,” said Atul Peshawaria, president of the Delhi Petrol Dealers’ Association, a group of at least 450 pump owners.

Petrol dealers will shut shop every Monday beginning May 24 to cut losses, said Peshawaria, and close down indefinitely after June14.

Fuel dealers say they will be out of business soon if the value added tax ( VAT) on diesel — raised in the budget this April — persists for long.

Diesel sales in April plunged to nearly half year- on- year, indicating several diesel buyers have already shifted from Delhi to Haryana where diesel is cheaper by nearly Rs 4 per litre, Peshawaria said.

Fuel dealers staged a protest outside Dikshit’s house last week and placed bouquets outside her official residence at 3, Motilal Nehru Marg.

They are now planning a demonstration on Monday at a petrol pump on Race Course Road, near the Prime Minister’s home.

Fuel dealers say they will not settle for anything less than parity in tax structure in the two states so that diesel costs the same.

Anil Bijlani of the dealers’ association said either the Delhi government should reduce the tax on diesel or make Haryana raise it at par.

“ We met Delhi finance minister A. K. Walia on Sunday and showed him with sale statistics that even the state government is losing revenue because of the increase in tax,” Bijlani said.

The state government said it is earning more tax revenue despite the drop in sales but they still pushed for tax parity with Haryana at a conference of finance ministers last week.

“ The talks drew a blank and it was then decided that the chief ministers of the two states will have to resolve the dispute,” a finance official said.

Walia had said last week that if Haryana were to raise its tax on diesel for parity, then Delhi will also have to increase the tax on petrol, which is higher in Haryana.

But Bijlani said they had no problem if the tax on petrol was raised. “ If we want parity, then we want it at all levels,” he said.

In June 2008, Haryana had reduced VAT on diesel from 12 per cent to 8.8 per cent, thereby making it cheaper than Delhi where VAT on fuel was 12.5 per cent.

From 13.5 crore litre a month, the sale of diesel in Delhi came down to 8.5 crore litre a month — a loss of 37 per cent, Peshawaria said.

Bijlani said the already bleeding dealers were dealt another blow when the Delhi government raised the VAT on diesel to 20 per cent from April 1.

“ This has resulted in diesel being costlier in Delhi by almost Rs 4 per litre when compared with the price at which it is sold in Haryana,” he added.

Delhi is bordered on all sides but East by Haryana. Uttar Pradesh borders the state in that direction.
