Understand the CBSE Grading System for Class X

CBSE is certainly making the education system flexible here atleast for class 10th Students. Board exams have been made optional from the academic year 2010-11.

A new system of evaluation – Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) – based on grades has been approved. It comprises formative and summative assessment of the student to be done over two terms – first and second -during the year-long academic calendar.

Summative Assessment: Based on the term-end examination

1) There will be two evaluations each in the first and second terms.

2) Each evaluation will carry 10 marks apiece.

Formative Assessment: To evaluate and grade class work, homework, assignment and project work

1) There will be one term-end exam for each term.

2) The first term-end exam will carry 20 marks.

3) The second term-end exam will carry 40 marks.

Grades Awarded

Students of class IX and X will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system. Each grade, given on the basis of both formative and summative assessments.

Here are the marks range and grades eligibility:

91-100 - A1
81 -90 - A2
71 -80 - B1
61-70 - B2
51 -60 - C1
41 -50 - C2
33-40 - D
21-32 - E1
00-20 - E2

There are mixed responses from students over the implementaion of the grading system; however we would say that chage is the only thing which is constant in this world. All the changes are not for good, neither for bad always.

All we need to do is wait and see how does it progress with the admissions in schools and universities with the new grading system implemented.

percentage should be told to the students. After all grades will give them an idea of their scoring. %age is must for further admission.

this system is rediculus and flop system this system dont allow the student to now about the talent and skill and they cant be compared with other studenta which belongs to same grade therefore compitition will be overed so no progrees will be seen.from myself it is very bad and wrong

Percentage is must. For preparation of merit list for admission, percentage is required. Precise evaluation can be done through percentage only.

CGPA is alright. No point arguing about few marks here and there. There are specific competitive exams for engg/medical etc.

Now it is very tough to take admission in schools after Xth since a student has to buy lots of forms and then they have to appear for written test inspite of giving board exam they have to appear for test which increases tension

Grading gives your relative position among the lot and does not indicate the absolute mearurement of your skill acquisition. If you happen to compete among good students you may get poor grades and vice a versa and thus this is a system which hides actual performance with comparative performance.
Further this will complicate in discriminating between ones getting equivalent grades in two different groups and thus will lead to stupid ways of discriminating such as age and thereby undermining the merit.
