Lara Dutta Sheds Clothes for PETA
by Surili Shah
Lara Dutta has decided to show her love for vegetarianism in true blue fashionista style. She has shot for the latest PETA campaign dressed in an ornate fulllength goddess gown — not made of the usual silk and taffeta but of raw leaves and vegetables.
Lara’s ‘vegetarian outfit’ was designed by Gavin Miguel who has dressed celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. The elaborate one- shoulder gown was made with hundreds of lettuce leaves, broccoli and mushrooms stitched together in a frilly pattern. The fish- tail flared hemline was designed using red leaves in rosette pattern.
While Lara sure looked ravishing in her ‘ vegan’ look, one wondered if her posing in a leaf dress would actually inspire any non- vegetarian to go vegan? Designer Sanchita Ajjampur said: “ Using a dress made out of vegetables is a banal way of presenting your thought.
To send a message, fashion has to be used creating a concept where it becomes easy to interpret for the people. There seems no direct connection here.” But PETA chief functionary Poorva Joshipura, said: “ Showing the animals being butchered or mishandled during the process can be very gory so having a celebrity wear a leafy dress with veggies is our way of sending across the string message in a fun, eye catching and lighthearted way.” While the elaborate shoot was planned much in advance, the dress had to be made on the spot.
Designer Gavin Miguel had a design ready in his mind and requested for specific vegetable, to go in the dress. Since the veggies are perishable and the leaves could wilt, everything had to be done real quickly.
Lara maintains the idea of the shoot and the vegetable dress remains to let vegetarianism grow on you. Now whether or not the idea works, Lara with her newly buffed up body and great styling rocks in her vegan avatar.
