For someone who became “ asocial and a little odd” during the five years she took to write her first novel, Torontobased finance whiz Sarita Mandanna was in full flow at the launch of her debut book Tiger Hills (Penguin India) at The Love Hotel, MGF Mall Saket, on Monday evening.

Flitting between nieces, cousins, authors, publishers and journalists, she didn’t exactly come across as someone who had forgotten the art of making small talk while balancing her job as vice- president of a private equity firm in New York, a long- distance marriage with hubby Siddharth in Toronto, and revising the manuscript that got Penguin India to pay her the highest advance ever to a debutante.

It helped that the evening was perfect for an open- air party: The mercury had come crashing down, the humidity was as bearable as it gets, and the breeze came as a pleasant surprise. But the one person missing from both the party and Penguin altogether was he who discovered the novelist in Mandanna — controversial former Penguin Canada CEO David Davidar.

“ He’ll weather the storm,” said Mandanna of her mentor, who was sacked from Penguin last month over charges of sexual harassment. Mandanna had first shown Davidar a collection of short stories on a visit to Toronto. “ He told me I should write a novel instead,” the writer remembered. Heeding to Davidar’s advice helped:

Tiger Hills , a sweeping saga set in Coorg, is being spoken of in the same breath as Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things . Like Davidar, who is strongly rooted to his family home in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, Mandanna, an army colonel’s daughter who has scaled Mt Kilimanjaro, has a strong connection to Coorg, which is evident from her descriptions of its beauty in her novel. “ I wanted to create a classical structure set in Coorg — very plot- driven, populated with defined characters and a long narrative arc,” said Mandanna of the book.

Outgoing Penguin India CEO Mike Bryan, who is due to take over Davidar’s job in Canada in August, is betting big on Tiger Hills . “ It is going to be a commercial success,” said Bryan. “ I loved the book. It is one which I should have written,” said author Jaishree Misra, who was in conversation with Mandanna at the launch. The novel is, as Penguin publishing and rights director Diya Kar Hazra points out, the return of good old- fashioned storytelling.

Mandanna is being represented by David Godwin, the literary superagent who was behind the phenomenal success of Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai. Will Mandanna go on to win a Booker, like Roy and Desai? Misra said the Booker jury looks for another kind of writing. “ Usually, it likes simplicity in writing.

Of course, she made it a point to add, “ This is not just one of the best debut novels I have read, but one of the best novels.” Mandanna, on her part, is unfazed. “ The only bar I set myself is that I want to do something I am proud of,” she said. Booker or no Booker, there will be enough parties to raise a toast to Tiger Hills .

Champions of freedom of expression are forever dogged by doubts over where to draw the line. But the line gets blurred when political opinion- makers get creative about the way they take on their detractors — often losing any modicum of decency, and occasionally triggering intense debate.

The Polish city of Poznan is in the throes of just such a debate — sparked by a billboard that merges Mickey Mouses image with that of a swastika and a nude woman's body representing what its Italian creator calls the horrors of the American lifestyle.

The giant poster, which went up in June in the western city of Poznan just steps from a synagogue, is an Italian artist's take on what he calls the "horrors" of the American lifestyle and is one piece of artwork in a contemporary art exhibition opening in the autumn.

But the reactions show that in Poland, where memories of the suffering inflicted during Nazi rule remain strong, there is little appetite for satirical or artistic uses of images linked to Nazi Germany.

"This art provocation is a form of violence against the sensitivity of many people," said Norbert Napieraj, a city council member who asked prosecutors to ban the poster.

Prosecutors, however, determined that the poster is art and does not violate the country's laws against glorifying Nazism, the Telegraph reported.

These kind of incidents take place when a party or a group of people try to be creative to attract more attention to prove their point however the problem starts when the other group misreads the intentions of the posters or canvases and give birth to the outrage and controversies like this.

United Nations has declared the July 18th 2010 as the Nelson Mandela Day. This announcement has been made to honor the father of South Africa on his 92nd birthday. The UN earlier in November 2009 passed a resolution for the purpose.

Mandela led the freedom struggle in South Africa as the head of the African National Congress. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison accusing sabotage and other serious crimes. He became the President of South Africa and won the first complete Democratic election in 1994.

The UN appreciates and acknowledges his leading role in Africa’s liberation, unity and the creation of a non-racial, non sexist and a democratic South Africa.

Mandela recently suffered great shock when he lost his great granddaughter in a car accident on the eve of the World Cup’s opening match in South Africa.

I guess this is the right step taken by UN as we should forget heroes like Mandela who has dedicated his life for the liberation and democracy for the nation.

George Steinbrenner, 80 years old, who is also called as the boss of New York Yankees died Tuesday morning in Tampa after suffering a massive heart attack.

Steinbrenner bought the New York Yankees on 1973 and it is valued as $1.6 billion estimated by the Forbes magazine, which means he knew how to turn the things is gold and he was the visionary.

Former Yankees manager Joe Torre said, "You didn't work with him, you worked for him,"

"George was certainly 'The Boss,' and you certainly understood that and what that took in. You had to give answers and give a full accounting of yourself", he added.

Steinbrenner family released the news on Tuesday Morning with the statement, "It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing,". "He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family - his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer, Jessica and Hal; and all his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."

The Supreme Court of Nepal has postponed the final verdict of Charles Sobhraj after he appealed against district court verdict of sentencing him to life imprisonment for the murder of American backpacker Connie Jo Bronzich in 1975.

Charles Sobhraj is 65 year old and if sources are to be believed he has already begun planning his reunion with his daughter, a quick wedding and is looking forward to a life of limelight in books and TV shows.

The verdict was postponed as the two judges hearing the case said they were not able to go through the complete arguments submitted by the prosecution and Sobhraj's lawyers within the given time. Justice Ram Prasad Shah also said they needed more time to examine the documents filed by both sides.

Delaying the verdict seems alright if the judges could not go through the documents however if they are going to set him free then there would be lot on anger among the people as it is believed that he murdered 12 to 24 people between 1970 and 1976 in Thailand, India and Nepal.

Olympics would take place in 2010 in London which certainly would not end the world. It has been talk of the town for a long long time now that world is going to end on 21st December, 2012, what we say regarding this in ruthless words, all crap. It all started when some group of experts proposed Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae based on the 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar which ends on 21st December, 2012.

After which sessions of long discussions, expert speaks and newspapers articles have always been in the view. Scholars from different parts of the world have their own opinions and thoughts and most of them agrees on one thing after taking all the things in consideration that nothing like end of world going to take place in 2012.

If we notice closely, world ends for few everyday due to natural disasters, terrorist activities or by force. In amidst of it, people still plan their lives, students educate themselves for the better future and all other activities remain the same despite of what we see in terms of these chaotic activities around us almost everyday now. I guess, 2010 would not be different from this, it is just two years down the line.

Trust us, World is not going to end in 2012, however hollywood flick made on this subject was a big hit for me.

When Time magazine published its celebrity writer Joel Stein’s column, My Private India , on June 28, it couldn’t have ever imagined that it would trigger a Web war. And that the charge against it would be led by the Hollywood actor of Indian descent, Kal Penn ( best known for his role in Mira Nair’s The Namesake ).

Stein’s column was a supposedly funny take on his hometown Edison, New Jersey, and how the influx of Indians has changed it dramatically.

He wrote: “ I am very much in favour of immigration everywhere in the US except Edison, NJ. The mostly white suburban town I left when I graduated from high school in 1989 … has become home to one of the biggest Indian communities in the US, as familiar to people in India as how to instruct stupid Americans to reboot their Internet routers.” Penn, who was born Kalpen Suresh Modi and grew up in the New Jersey towns of Montclair and Marlboro, reacted to Stein’s column by writing a rejoinder on the Web- based news and views site, The Huffington Post, on July 2.

The response is titled The “ Hilarious” Xenophobia of Time’s Joel Stein and Penn writes: “ Were it not for the intelligent, fresh sense of humour of individuals like Mr Stein, the world may never know about Americans who happen to be of Indian descent. Gags about impossibly spicy food? I’d never heard those before! Multiple Gods with multiple arms? Multiple laughs! Recounting racial slurs like ‘ dot- head’? Oh, Mr Stein is too good! I don’t know how he comes up with such unique bits....” Penn spells out the reason for his outrage.

“Growing up a few miles from Edison, NJ, I always thought it was hilarious when I’d get the crap kicked out of me by kids like Stein who would yell ‘ go back to India, dothead!’,” he writes.

Most Indians felt Stein came across as being insensitive to Indians. He writes at one point: “ For a while, we assumed all Indians were geniuses.

Then, in the 1980s, the doctors and engineers brought over their merchant cousins, and we were no longer so sure about the genius thing. In the 1990s, the not- as- brilliant merchants brought their even- less- bright cousins, and we started to understand why India is so damn poor.”

Macy’s Annual Fireworks New York on July 4 during Independence Day celebration of United States lightens up the skies above the Hudson River, snubbing the East River which seems a real treat to the eyes.

The Macy’s fireworks display show are featuring more than 40,000 shells exploding at a rate of more than 1,500 per minute and fireworks reaching heights of 1,000 feet in the air.

At approximately 9:20 pm on July 4th, the 26-minute display will be set off from six barges positioned between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River. Macy’s Fireworks 2010 has increased the number of shells that can reach heights of 1,000 feet in the sky.

It seems the efforts of Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center are finally ready to pay as they claim that they have found the genetic basis of alopecia areata which would make it easier to develop new treatments for the condition, in which loss can range from patches on the scalp to complete absence of hair on the entire body.

Alopecia Areata is a hair disease that affects hair loss from the human scalp and over 5 Millions people suffer from this disease. This perhaps is the most disease found in humans.

This research was conducted using more than 1,000 samples from the National Alopecia Areata Registry, a patient registry for alopecia areata funded by the National Institute for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.

Reserchers searched for a correlation between how many genes (each gene comes in two pairs) people with different severities of alopecia areata carried, and found that people who carried 13-14 genes had disease that did not progress, while those with 16 or more most often progressed to alopecia universalis, or total baldness.

This would help in judging the severity of the disease from peron to person.

If everything goes alright, youngsters who are reading this at the moment would walk bald in their old age as perhaps their Fathers or Grand Fathers must be doing.

This can easily be called as one of the shocking diseases we have come across in our times. A 21 year old girl Lizzie Velasquez from Austin, Texas needs to eat, or she must eat something with in the duration of every 15 minutes to stay alive.

She has this rare conditions which prevents her from gaining weight and to be in the business she takes upto 60 small meals a day.

Miss Lizzie Velasquez Weighs only 4st 3lbs and she is 5ft 2 inches tall. Media guys got to talk to her about her conditions on which she had to say this ,"I weigh myself regularly and if I gain even one pound I get really excited," said 5ft 2 ins Miss Velasquez, who wears size triple zero clothes. I eat every 15-20 minutes to keep my energy levels up. I eat small portions of crisps, sweets, chocolate, pizza, chicken, cake, doughnuts, ice cream, noodles and pop tarts all day long, so I get pretty upset when people accuse me of being anorexic."

She was born 4 weeks prematurely and weighing just 2lb 10oz which put Doctors in great deal of shock that how did she survive.

Doctors have no idea what is wrong with her bosy and speculated that she might have the genetic disorder De Barsy syndrome but soon ruled it out as well because she did not experience any learning difficulties.

Lizzie future can be predicted that how far she would be able to go like this but this is really one of the most shocking thing I have ever come across.
