Puri rath yatra stampede killed a woman killed & hurt eight

A woman devotee was killed and eight others were injured in a stampede during the annual Rath Yatra of lord Jagannath at Puri on Tuesday.

Fifty- five- year- old Bijay Laxmi Mohanty of Puri’s Bimanbadu Sahi fell down in the melee while the chariot of lord Balabhadra was being pulled by the devotees. Trampled upon by many and gasping for breath she died on her way to hospital.

Of the eight others injured in the incident, two were identified as Pramod Sahu of Rourkela and Alok Kundu from West Bengal. Over 50 people fainted and had to be provided with first aid during the procession which saw a gathering of 10 lakh in the temple town.

Devotees from across the country and abroad thronged the Grand Road in Puri to pull the chariots of lord Jagannath and his two siblings.
