Villain Movie Review, Ravana Review, Ratings

Mani Ratnam’s Raavan in Hindi or Villain in Telugu is inspired from the Asokavanam episode in Ramayanam. It is a modern day version of the episode where Raavanan kidnaps Sita and keeps her in Asokavanam. Later Raman ventures to save his wife and bring her back.

He worked in the movie with the same team which also worked in his last magical film 'Guru' i.e. Santosh Sivan- Cameraman, Srikar Prasad - Editor and A R Rahman taking care of music.

Story goes as Dev (Prithviraj) is a tough police officer who is appointed to catch Veeraiah (Vikram). During the marriage of Veeraiah’s sister (Priyamani), Dev attacks him and injures him. Meanwhile, Veeraiah’s sister gets detained by the police for interrogation, but gets gang raped by the police men. This irks Veeraiah who wreaks a vengeance against the police.

Dev was responsible for everything, Veeraiah kidnaps Ragini (Aishwarya), wife of Dev, to teach him a lesson. Dev sets off to the forest in search of Ragini and Veeraiah. A forest guard (Karthik) comes forward to assist Dev to capture Veeraiah. With the help of the forest guard, Dev was able to trace Ragini. Ragini, who makes several vain attempts to escape from the clutches of Veeraiah. The latter never harmed Ragini.

Vikram has been superb with his performance, next in line comes Prithviraj and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who has also performed terrific. Priya Mani as Vikram’s step sister has done a commendable job.

Now it has hit the theaters and wait is over, go catch it weekend is coming as this is a must Watch, trust me you would not want to miss it.

Hello,
I believe this movie is one of the finest efforts in Indian Cinema. This is not the story of Beera[Raavan] or Dev[Ram] or Ragini[Sita], they are representatives of human nature. The focus is not on individuals and there personal history but the journey they make. Ram and raavan happens only in mythology, in reality no one can be categorized in terms of black or white but can be defined only in grey. This Movie exactly is an effort to showcase this aspect of Human Nature. Ram is not portrayed as the epitome of righteousness and raavan is neither portrayed as the canyon of wickedness. Ram and ravan sways between the opposite poles of human nature. Sita's character shares many common aspect of general public. She at the start of this journey was entirely siding with the views of Ram but once after being with Raavan takes a softer stand towards him and his concerns and towards the end of the movie was even ready to live with him. She is the close witness along with viewer into the life of both Ram and Raavan. She along with the viewer was opinionated about Ram as well as Raavan which they will change later. Movie is not an attempt in covering the individual stories of Ram, Raavan or Sita and if it is viewed as such it won't make much sense either. Here forest again is metaphor for life.Striking examples of Ram and Raavan can be easily identified in contemporary India. All those naxalite leaders and terrorists are easily categorized by general public is of Raavan's nature and the our government machinery that opposes them belonging to the stands of Ram. We rarely gets an opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of ram or ravaan as closely as Sita. But the film as a contemporary version of the epic is more lenient towards Raavan because in many an occasion system is very much responsible in the creation of Raavan. Human nature is primarily good and in many occasions its the circumstances that props up the Bad in us. The movie i believe is not very successful in getting across its message to the masses but for the discerning among the audience will be hooked by its central message. As like the any other Mani Ratnam movie the technical aspects of the movie is of high class. Some the shots looks risky that you will ask,how they are made possible. All the actors should be appreciated for the difficulties that they have gone through to make this movie possible.
This is a must watch movie for anyone aspiring to have a taste of different cinema at least to encourage such efforts and i firmly believe that the movie is an achievement within the limitations of commercial cinema.
My Rating:- 3.7/5

Abishek will never be an actor as good as his dad, Ashwariya will never be an actor if not for her face she is not good at anything, poor personality and forgetable performance all through her career.
Mani Rat is using the same old Tamil violet themed movie template its getting stale.
Also the movie is a big flop but the Bachan family will claim it was a big hit overseas confusing the Desi Audience into spending the money to watch this crap. Its not Rajneethi thats for sure....

Syam...Message of any story emerges organically and a bad story poorly told should not be looked upon as one with deeper thoughts..Raavan has indeed failed.

i dont understand y people are hell-bent on manipulating the real happenings of our glorious culture by making films like these... nobody , not even our family, will remember us after 50 years, but ramayan n mahabharat are remembered since more than 5000 yrs... n this shows the greatness of Ram and Krishna (who were historical and not mythological characters)... wat right or ability do we have to question something that happened thousands of years ago and has been accepted by one and all since then... just because Ram n Krishna r not here to justify doesn't mean that we keep on questioning them!! neither raavan nor rajneeti have captured the real essence of the great epics...

If you are expecting a faithful adaptation of the Ramayana, do us all a favour and rent the DVDs that contain Doordarshan's TV epic.

If you have an open mind and want to go beyond that to watch a creative filmmaker's perspective on a story that we have heard millions of times since childhood, you must watch Raavan. You might not like it, but it will make you think. And, that is what a good movie does.

This is a class of Maniratnam..As Shyam rightly pointed out this is not the story of ramayana.. and the lovNote one point the love between Dev and Ragini has not been shown.. which itself confirms that it is not ramayana. You may ask then y did maniratnam place Kalvare song( Song between dev and ragini) for those my answer is "The song only has female voice in it which shows sita's love on ram and the visuals also depicit that ragini runs behind Dev. If it was a duet then u can say it as a part of ramayana".
