Viveka Babaji, 37, was found dead at her Bandra residence late on Friday, the police said. She reportedly hung herself from the ceiling fan in her apartment in Continental building on Hill Road.

Around half past eight, her neighbours alerted the fire brigade after they smelt LPG gas and no one answered the door. Fire brigade personnel broke open the door and found her hanging. The gas cylinder had also been turned on. Preliminary investigations suggested she had killed herself.

“ We have not recovered a suicide note, but found some personal notes in her flat and are scrutinising them,” additional commissioner of police Amitabh Gupta said.

Her relatives have given a statement to the police that she had been depressed and was taking pills. But the police refused to divulge the type of medication.

The model from Mauritius, who lived alone, had been part of a steamy advertisement for Kamasutra condoms with model Marc Robinson in the late 90s. She also took part in the 1994 Miss Universe contest as Miss Mauritius, the year Sushmita Sen won the crown.

Babaji had shifted to India for a successful modelling career in the nineties. She also acted in a couple of films which had bombed at the box office.
