Air India Plane Crash at Mangalore Airport, 160 Feared Dead
by Surili Shah
A tragic accident of Air India Express on the Mangalore Airport claiming the lives of around 165 passengers on board. The plane, arriving from Dubai, overshot the runway at the southern Indian airport at about 6 a.m. local time, and burst into flames, according to television reports. There were believed to be a few survivors.
This crashed Air India plane was a Boeing 737 about five or six years old, was cleared for landing and the problems appear to have surfaced once it was on the ground.
Yankini K a frequent visitor to Mangalore Airport said, "Mangalore airport is situated on a steep hill. While landing, I'm always worried what if the pilot can't bring the plane to a stop quickly enough! During monsoon, for 3 months, thick cloud cover, heavy winds and 3-4 inches of rain per day makes the situation even more complex. Apparently, they assign only experienced pilots to fly into this airport. Hope this accident will reveal the danger to the public.".
Rescue team arrived 1 hour after crash took place. According to CNN-IBN this the cause of the late rescue could have been the "rugged surrounding terrain." "The network said that smoke from the plane and the rugged surrounding terrain were hampering rescue efforts, though about 25 to 30 ambulances were on the scene," CNN reports.
We pray for the people who have been taken to the hospital and for the people who have lost their loved ones in this tragic incident.

Hotmail Gets New Look, Still Not Enough
by Surili Shah

Three weeks ago, Microsoft updated its Live Messenger, giving it some nifty features. This week it previewed the new Hotmail. Microsoft officials say that it’s going to be gradually launched over the next two to three months, and it will be based upon which server in the world your account resides.
The new Hotmail is basically a catchup game. It has features that Gmail and Yahoo have had for years, and some of the new clever features such as drag and drop images and videos from a search engine within the Hotmail window may not make you go back to Hotmail.
A seemingly impressive feature is that you can upload up to 10 gigabytes of online images in a single email. Assuming you want to do that ( I don’t given the speeds we have in India), Microsoft has cleverly used SkyDrive ( its ‘ cloud’ service) so that you don’t really have to clog your hard disk.
Hotmail’s within- mail search is much weaker that Gmail. Microsoft says its new categorisation will help people save time by classifying mail beforehand.
But let’s say we search using Gmail, the difference in time is really a matter of two or three seconds. Gmail still wins.
Gmail Labs lets you integrate any new feature into the mailbox in a matter of seconds. Hotmail has no Labs feature, but it has an integrated Live Messenger into its main screen, to which our response is – duh! Four years too late, guys! The biggest disappointment though is the design. It looks clunky even though it may not be. And here’s an idea, Hotmail: text ads.
The only redeeming feature about the new Hotmail is the Active View for photographs, which allows you to view photos in full screen mode without having to download them. Will I go back to Hotmail after three years of dormancy? Don’t think so.

Shrek Forever After Review, Rating, Response
by Surili Shah

So, a plot spin facilitates a situation where the lovable green ogre, battling midlife crisis, has to undo all that he has done over the past three films if he must unite with his loved one. For a brilliant franchise as this one just any sequel won’t do, after all — more so if you are touting your new film as ‘The Final Chapter’. You could argue that Shrek probably didn’t need this final chapter.
The makers would tell you there was a fat load of money still to be made from brand value. What’s more, this time they are serving it in 3D — so that’s an add-on for fans.
Shrek starts off with very little script to back up his new effort. Dying to get back to his ‘real ogre’ days when he enjoyed scaring villagers with a good old ogre roar or two, he is conned into signing a deal by the slimy Rumpelstiltskin (voice of Walt Dohrn).
Shrek realises only too late what he’s in for: he finds himself in an alternate version of his world where Rumpelstiltskin (looking like a squished Anthony Hopkins) is the king, his favourite Donkey works for a gang of witches, and Puss In Boots is a housecat with eating disorder. Worse, Fiona, who’s leading rebel ogres in a revolution to overthrow Rumpelstiltskin, has never met Shrek.
Our hero must undo whatever he has done before, to restore his world and unite with his loved one. Never mind if sound effects (read, Shrek’s burps and grunts) are rehashed from the earlier films, Forever After still packs enough gags to make you laugh. The storyline reveals shades the Frank Capra classic, It’s A Wonderful Life, and the franchise tradition of inserting nodding winks to pop culture is maintained. Those clued in will wholly enjoy the Shrek remix of Top of the world, pop anthem by the Carpenters, as also a smart tribute to The Wizard Of Oz.
The 3D effect is as good as you expect from a franchise of this stature. Flying witches and towering ogres are basic stuff — director Mike Mitchell (who worked on the storyboard of Shrek The Third) wantonly lets giddy heights and flying objects loose all over his screen for impact all along. For Mitchell and studio bosses at Dreamworks, this film was obviously more about 3D action effect than storytelling.
Mike Myers as Shrek’s voice probably gets that trademark rumble right even in his dream. Banderas as Puss In Boots and new addition Walt Dohrn as Rumpelstiltskin regale with some great lines. If this was truly The Final Chapter, they’ve ended with style.
Rating 3/5

New Electricity Rates in Delhi to go Down by 10 to 20 Percent
by Surili Shah
Citizens of Delhi, reeling under price rise, could breathe a bit easy when the new power tariff comes into effect.
Sources said the revised tariff will make electricity cheaper by five to 10 per cent for domestic consumers and up to 20 per cent for industrial and commercial consumers.
However, the state government seems to be trying to throw a spanner in the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission ( DERC) decision to revise power tariff.
A day before the new power tariff was supposed to be announced, chief minister Sheila Dikshit decided to postpone it and instead asked the power regulator to assess the demands of power companies which are citing funds crunch to push for a tariff hike.
This forced the DERC to appeal to the solicitor general Gopal Subramanium who has now sided with the power regulators.
Subramanium has opined that such an intervention by a state government violates the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, a law that regulates the country’s power sector.
“ This is without doubt a serious fetter on a quasi- judicial function of the querist ( power regulator)… such direction is ultra vires and therefore void,” Subramanium wrote to the DERC that sought his opinion on the state government’s intervention.
The solicitor general has clearly indicated the announcement of this fiscal’s power tariff is already overdue by more than a fortnight and must be declared without further delay.
“ Section 64( 3) of the Act imposes an obligation on the commission to pass tariff orders within 120 days of receipt of tariff petitions,” Subramanium said.
Armed with Subramanium’s advice — though it doesn’t have any legal binding — the DERC now looks set for a face- off with the state government over the delay in announcing the revised tariff, sources said.
DERC secretary Amarendra Tewary has written to state power secretary Rajendra Kumar informing him about the solicitor general’s advice.
“ In view of the opinion of the Solicitor General… it is advisable to issue the tariff orders… without any delay,” Tewary’s letter read.
But Kumar said, “ I have nothing to say. We have asked the regulator for a statutory advice on the issues raised by the power companies and we are waiting for it.” While issuing Dikshit’s order on May 4, Kumar had said the Indian Electricity Act allows a state government to issue directions to the power regulator, including those related to tariff.
However, Subramanium observed that fixing tariff is the power regulator’s quasi- judicial right and directions issued by the Dikshit government under Section 108 of the Indian Electricity Act to stall it affects the regulator’s professional ability.
“ The querist ( power regulator) must therefore respond appropriately to the state government and proceed to issue the tariff orders in respect of the three private discoms,” Subramanium wrote in his reply.
The solicitor general’s opinion on the standoff also offers the regulator a long handle to offer its statutory advice to the government on its own terms.
While seeking Subramanium’s opinion, the regulator had contended it would have to have details about this year’s tariff if it were to offer statutory advice.
